Did you know that approximately 25 per cent of all jobs in Malaysia are likely to disappear by 2030 as a result of digitalisation? While this change in the job market is not entirely unexpected, the pace of change has accelerated with the outbreak of COVID-19 and the subsequent need to remain at home to break the chain of infection. This may be viewed in many ways as a positive development. According to the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), the number of digital job vacancies has tripled in 2020 despite the overall rise in unemployment figures. Therefore, it is important for students, fresh graduates, and working professionals to study carefully the dynamics of the circumstances with a view to discerning new trends in the job market. This will require adopting new mindsets and equipping themselves with digital skillsets for future careers.

Unsurprisingly, the careers that are popular and in demand today include data- and technology-related jobs, such as:

• Digital Marketing
  Digital marketing spans a massive network of customer touchpoints, i.e., an interactive space and media that a customer shares with a company. Those interested in the field are expected to have an understanding of each of the following: pay-per-click (PPC) advertising, search engine optimisation (SEO), content marketing, social media marketing, email marketing, mobile marketing and marketing automation. As the scope of digital marketing is extremely wide, individuals interested in this field are expected to be adaptable and to have a strong acumen for the many tools and processes in the marketing landscape.
   
• Cybersecurity
  The increasing usage of apps and e-payments means that we are exchanging our data for services at a far greater rate than ever before. As such, there is a greater need for cybersecurity, especially with cybercrime on the rise. Data breaches, for instance, can easily put personal data at risk of exposure overnight.
